Upcoming project [research stage]
Concept + Libretto + Direction: Elli Papakonstantinou
“Oedipus-SEX WITH MUM WAS BLINDING” is an innovative hybrid opera conceived, written and directed by Elli Papakonstantinou. It is designed as a neuroscientific experimental playground and an interactive new opera. The project draws from the myth of “Oedipus Rex” and from neuroscientific study cases, while pausing the question: “How far do biological factors influence us? Are we really free?” It will be developed in collaboration with neuroscientists from the Warburg Institute, School of Advanced Study, University of London, UK.The technological research of the project will be developed in collaboration with researchers at the CCRMA (Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics) at the Stanford University, USA where the director Elli Papakonstantinou will spend 6 months honored with a “Fulbright Artist’s Award 18-19”.
This project is driven by a need to move into an unknown area and to create an experience placing the audience at the heart of it; it is designed to actively engage the audience as the chorus of the performance and to incorporate scientific experiments and participatory engagement at the intersection of arts and sciences. The concept hopes to rediscover the active role of audiences and to relocate the community at the heart of a political performance. It will be performed at Stanford University and in Athens.
It is supported by the Fulbright Foundation, the Greek Ministry of Culture and NEON.
